Dana Michelle Nessel, the 54th Attorney General of Michigan, is an American lawyer and politician.
Nessel is the second openly lesbian attorney general elected in the United States (after Massachusetts’ Maura Healey) and the first LGBTQ person elected to statewide office in Michigan.
Dana belongs to the Democratic Party. Moreover, she is also Michigan’s first Jew to be elected Attorney General.
Dana attended West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield Township, Michigan, and graduated in 1987.

Nessel successfully argued for the plaintiffs in DeBoer v. Snyder in 2014, which declared Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional.
Obergefell v. Hodges legalized same-gender marriage in the United States, which was eventually consolidated with additional cases and appealed to the Supreme Court as Obergefell v. Hodges.

The pair married in July 2015, with Judge Bernard Friedman officiating the ceremony, who had previously overturned Michigan’s same-sex marriage law in March 2014.
Moreover, Fair Michigan, a nonprofit organization dedicated to prosecuting hate crimes against the LGBTQ community, was formed by her in 2016.
