Mbale High School Description
Mbale High School is a mixed day and boarding school, located in Shisele location, Vihiga County. The learning option of the school includes boarding only.
The school was established in the 1920s when friends African Mission established Mbal Primary School. This school later converted to Mbale Harambee Mixed School and was registered in 1964. The following year, it becomes a Government Mixed School with one stream.
In 1983, it converted to a Boys Boarding School and changed its name to Mbale High school after the introduction of an A-level.
In 1992, it become a boarding school and introduced the fourth stream in 1998 to cope with increased demand for secondary school education.
It is planning to increase the number of streams to 6 in order to satisfy increasing demand for places at the school. With a student population of 1,274 students and 48 teachers, 34 of this number posted by TSC, the school still faces a shortage of 18 teachers.
Kennedy Okoth, the school principal, joined Mbale High School in 2009 when the school had a population of 820 pupils and a mean score of 6.34 points in KCSE. During his tenure, the school had seen its mean score improve to 6.5 in 2016 KCSE. The school sent 129 candidates to public universities during the 2016 KCSE examination.
The principal attributes success at Mbale High School to students waking up early to go to class and academic trips offered to top 10 students in all classes every term. He says the school has been working hard to improve performance in the English language. They have set up vigorous and thorough revision sessions and are doing joint exams with neighboring schools in order to benchmark and improve our performance.
The school slogan of ‘Add Value’ has instilled academic discipline among the students. They constantly aim at improving in every exam done in school. This also complements the spirit of competition among classes and individual students which has also made them strive for quality grades.
