Maya Widmaier-Picasso Parents: Meet Pablo Picasso, Marie-Thérèse Walter
Pablo Picasso and Marie-Thérèse Walter were the parents of Maya Widmaier-Picasso.
Maya’s father Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist and theatre designer. He spent most of his adult life in France.
He was born on October 25, 1881, in Málaga, Spain.
Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence.
During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas.
After 1906, the Fauvist work of the slightly older artist Henri Matisse motivated him to explore more radical styles, beginning a fruitful rivalry between the two artists, who subsequently were often paired by critics as the leaders of modern art.
Pablo Picasso died on April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France.
Maya’s mother Marie-Thérèse Walter was a French model and lover of Pablo Picasso from 1927 to 1940. Their relationship began when she was seventeen years old.
Walter was born on 13 July 1909 in Le Perreux, France. She was the illegitimate child of a French woman and a Swedish businessman.
Marie-Thérèse Walter died by suicide at Juan-les-Pins, South of France on October 20, 1977.
