Tarte Cosmetics is a cosmetics company headquartered in New York City. Maureen Kelly founded the company in 1999 out of the one-bedroom apartment she and her husband shared in the East Village of New York. She accumulated $100,000 in credit card debt in her first year of business to keep it afloat, and her parents and four siblings were sometimes recruited to help with packing and shipping. “My parents weren’t excited about me leaving Columbia, but they still supported me,” she said.
Her first item was a cheek stain which was used for the subsequent year for the Self magazine cover. Also in 2000, Tarte Cosmetics launched its first order at Henri Bendel. In 2003, Tarte products were being sold by Sephora at QVC in 2005. In 2010 Ulta Beauty started selling the company’s products.
However, on September 11, 2001, when her husband went to work that day in the south tower of the World Trade Center and never came home, Kelly’s company was almost sidelined by tragedy. Just after the first aircraft hit the building, “he called and said he was fine and would call back in ten minutes,” Kelly told People. But he never showed up.
A widow before she was 30, Kelly was devastated by the loss but forced herself to return to work as soon as possible, driven by the idea that her late husband would have expected her to let her company fold. Tarte’s sales figures had reached the $2 million mark by 2003, and Kelly introduced a Tarte fragrance the following year.
In 2005, she signed a contract with the television shopping channel QVC, which resulted in an impressive spike in revenues: Tarte took in around $10 million in 2006, but reached sales of $15 million a year later; its Cheek Stain remains one of the company’s top-selling products.
In March 2014, Japanese company Kosé Corporation, which wanted to expand into North America, purchased a 93.5 percent stake in Tarte Cosmetics for $135 million. Tarte revealed in June 2018 the rebirth of its sister brand, Awake, which is manufactures a line of cruel-free skincare products.
Currently, Tarte products are sold in U.S. department stores, including Macy’s and Makeup Brands, and in Sephora stores globally.
Kelly donates to charity five percent of Tarte’s net profits and has worked with Dress for Success and Habitat for Humanity. She explained why in the Entrepreneur magazine interview she named her 2007 Woman of the Year. “People helped me on the way, and I was given wonderful opportunities,” she told Wilson. “You must give back no matter how small you are.”
