Matthew Wolfenden Tattoos
This is what Matthew Wolfenden says about his tattoos, “My first one was a B for Buster, then I got his date of birth on my arm. The most personal ones are linked to my son. I started getting them after he was born – I didn’t have them when I did Dancing On Ice. I knew I’d get the bug.
It’s kind of an early mid-life crisis in some respects. I’ve got one full sleeve, two on my back and one on my belly saying “Whatever and ever Amen”, which is a Ben Folds Five lyric who I’ve seen on tour every year since I was 15.”

Matthew Wolfenden Emmerdale
Matthew Wolfenden plays David Metcalfe in Emmerdale, he is the illegitimate son of Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell). Eric Pollard (Chris Chittell) had never divorced from his first wife, Eileen, and went on to have an affair with a woman named Lydia Holloway in 1981. They split up with Eric leaving knowing nothing
the existence of his son, David Metcalfe, who was born shortly after.
David arrives in the village in late 2006, immediately turning the ladies’ heads. He came to the village, looking for his biological father, Eric. Eric had left David’s mother, Lydia Holloway, before David was born and stole £20,000 from her. He gets a job at the sweet factory so that he can find out more about his father, striking up a flirty friendship with fun-loving Del Dingle (Hayley Tamaddon) and hoped some romance would come of it, but was disappointed when Del mistakenly thought her uncle Zak Dingle (Steve Halliwell) was his father and distanced herself.
David battled testicular cancer and was caught trying to take a picture of his testicles with his pants down by Leyla. She then takes a picture for him. While they talk about David’s impending battle, the pair hug and David says that he “loves” Leyla, which Jacob overhears, and wrongly assumes David and Leyla to be an item. The following day; his 13th birthday, he confronts them about their encounter, and David sets the record straight, in the process telling Jacob that he might have cancer. Their bond is strengthened because of this.

Matthew Wolfenden Interview

Did you ever wonder what you would have done in David’s shoes?
Matthew Wolfenden: It’s not something you want to think of or bring your own personal life into, but as an actor you have to. I’m not sure what I’d have done, but I don’t think David went as far as some people wanted.
Despite the complaints, we had 11,000 people on Twitter saying it was handled sensitively. I’ve had tweets saying “it happened to me and I didn’t do anything about it”, so I’m glad it was highlighted.
Internet porn has been attributed to Lachlan’s behaviour. Presumably that wasn’t a thing when you were a teenager?
Matthew Wolfenden: We’re living in a different world now to when I was growing up. A lot of 14 year olds out there think this is how it works and how women are treated. We touched on it when Lachlan was looking up on the internet how to kiss a girl and the video is derogatory to women. I’m 35 next month, but there’s so much stuff now that I never had, it’s scary.
What were you like with girls at 14?
Matthew Wolfenden: I was a scaredy-cat at 14, I got on with everyone – I was a good boy at school. I was neither quiet nor the class clown, but I don’t think I ever had a detention. I wasn’t some kind of heart-throb – I’m not saying I am now, but I definitely wasn’t then with my curtain hair and spots.
Can you remember your first kiss?
Matthew Wolfenden: No [blushes], obviously it was really bad because my memory’s been wiped! Maybe because I was training before and after school doing gymnastics. I eventually got into the British under-16s team, then one night I fell off the rings and landed on my head instead of my feet and fractured two vertebrae in my back. That put a stop my gymnastics career.
Then fate intervened and you ended up on Emmerdale where you met Charley and had your son Buster, four.
Exactly, things happen for a reason.
But you and Charley broke up in 2013 for a little while…
It was never a permanent split, we just needed some time apart. Sometimes life just gets on top of you. We had a ‘terrible’ two year old at the time and needed time to look at what we had, but it was the best thing we could have done.
How are you different now you’re back together?
Matthew Wolfenden: I’m not – I was always perfect! I’m maybe more thoughtful, more romantic. I took Charley to Paris for Valentine’s Day and we signed a padlock and locked it to Love Lock Bridge. In all seriousness, there were things we needed to assess, but we saw each other every day because of Buster, it wasn’t like we’d fallen out.
Any plans to tie the knot?
Matthew Wolfenden: Yes, but we wouldn’t want a big wedding. It’s not something we are desperate to do tomorrow, it might be 10 years, it might be one year, we might even run away to Gretna Green. That’s right, isn’t it? I suddenly thought that’s where Postman Pat lives. We’ve narrowed it down to a beach abroad.
So you like exotic beach holidays?
Matthew Wolfenden: Well, at the moment we’re spending all our weekends in our caravan in Wales. I’d been trying to persuade Charley to buy a camper van or a tent for ages, but she hated the idea.
Then I managed to get her to this static caravan site at the foothills of Snowdonia by the beach and she fell in love. Now everything revolves around this caravan, and these days she’s more likely to buy a warm jacket to sit on the beach in than high heels.
What do you worry about?
Matthew Wolfenden: I worry about when I’m going to see the next episode of Bates Motel, that’s as harrowing as it gets! When you have a little one, a lot of your worries come from them, but I’m a happy, positive person. I watch a lot of documentaries that make me think. It was one I saw on meat production that turned me vegetarian. I was having a week off meat, then I never looked back.
Have you made any other major lifestyle changes recently?
Matthew Wolfenden: I stopped drinking beer and lager a year ago. I used to like my proper ales – I’m a Yorkshire lad – but I didn’t want to be one of them middle-aged men with a beer belly, so I drink red wine, unless I go out and it’s vodka and orange. You can’t drink red wine all night, you’d be in a state!
Any good drunken injuries?
Matthew Wolfenden: More often than not I’ll wake up with bruises everywhere. It’s like I manage to walk into every single table on the way out of the pub.
