Matt Groening (/??re?n??/ GRAY-ning; born February 15, 1954) is a cartoonist, screenwriter, producer, animator, author, musician, comedian, and voice actor from the United States. He is the creator of the comic strip Life in Hell (1977–2012), as well as the co-creator of The Simpsons (1989–present), Futurama (1999–2003, 2008–2013), and Olive, the Other Reindeer, a Christmas special. Life in Hell was Groening’s first professional cartoon sale, to the avant-garde Wet magazine in 1978. The cartoon was published in 250 weekly publications at its height. James L. Brooks was intrigued by Life in Hell.
Brooks approached Groening in 1985 with the offer of working on the Fox variety programme The Tracey Ullman Show as an animator. Brooks had hoped that Groening would adapt his Life in Hell characters for the programme. Fearing losing his ownership rights, Groening created a new cartoon family, Matt Groening’s Simpsons family, and named the members after his own parents and sisters, with Bart being an anagram of the term brat.
