A native of Linwood, Michigan — known for its Pickle Festival and perch fishing far more than its basketball — the son of Jennifer and Mike Costello went to work on becoming a hoops hero. He accomplished that by bringing the Mr. Basketball Award to Bay City Western, a long-suffering basketball program that enjoyed little success before his arrival or since his departure.

He led Western to a stunning run to the Class A state semifinals as a junior and was named Gatorade Player of the Year in 2011 and 2012. He graduated with program records of 1,518 points, 1,069 rebounds, and 280 blocked shots. Costello needed to prove himself all over again at Michigan State, where his outside game was stripped away and he was relegated to banging under the boards. He eventually thrived in that role, serving as a key figure in MSU’s run to the Final Four as a junior and earning second-team All-Big Ten as a senior. He scored 888 points with 642 rebounds in his collegiate career and set the program record with 146 blocked shots.
