Matt gained wide recognition as the drummer for Seattle-based rock band ‘Soundgarden’, which he had joined in 1986. He simultaneously became a member of Pearl Jam in 2010 and the reunited Soundgarden, and remained with Soundgarden until it disbanded in 2017 after the death of its lead singer, Chris Cornell.

Soundgarden was made up of vocalist and guitarist Chris Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil, and bassist Hiro Yamamoto. He played drums for the band replacing drummer Scott Sundquist. The band released an album which earned them its first major award nomination, a Grammy Award, in 1990. He was later replaced by former Nirvana guitarist Jason Everman.
