Matt Besser is an American actor, comedian, director, producer, and writer, best known as one of the four founding members of the sketch comedy troupe of the Upright Citizens Brigade, who had their own show at Comedy Central from 1998 to 2000.
After seeing an improvisational comedy show at the iO Theater featuring Dave Koechner, Tim Meadows and Chris Farley, Besser started taking classes there. His improv group Victim’s Family (along with Rick Roman, Adam McKay, Miles Stroth, and Ian Roberts), later renamed The Family (minus Roman, plus Neil Flynn, and Ali Farahnakian), was led by Del Close, the first long-form group based on Del.
Besser is a founding member of UCB which started in 1990 as a group of sketch comedies. Ian Roberts, Ali Farahnakian, Adam McKay, Rick Roman, and Horatio Sanz were originally members of the group. UCB were regular guests on stage in the New Variety presented by the Chicago Improv comedy club during that period.
While working at the New Variety, Besser was cast and directed in the TV comedy/variety special Twisted by the founder of New Variety and artistic director R. O’Donnell, which aired on Fox, Chicago. Twisted also featured Besser alongside stand-up comic Michelle Garb in a series of improvised commercials directed by O’Donnell for McDonald’s, Toyota, and Ameritech.
