Mason Mount Chelsea Goals
What has followed after losing 4 nil to Man Utd has been a 3-2 win at Norwich, a 5-2 victory at Wolves and now beating Southampton 4-1 on Sunday afternoon, and Mason Mount has scored in them all. Add in the win at Lille and our away form since losing at Old Trafford has been exemplary.‘We look back at that [Man United] game and to lose 4-0 is not good but we took a lot of positives from the game and we did not think it was a 4-0,’ reckons Mount, speaking after the latest win.
‘We bounced back and now we are in the fifth position and we just need to keep working hard and hopefully, we can get the three points every game.
‘We have been playing well and having that big result in the Champions League, that really helped us out.‘It has been going well away from home. There are little things we can work on, like conceding [against Southampton] to go 2-1 which made it a tough period of the game, so there are things we can work on but away from home we have been very good.’
Mount rifled in the goal that put us 2-0 up at St Mary’s and he says he always believed he would be able to score goals at Premier League level, having done so 11 times in the Championship last season when on loan at Derby.
‘You always have to have that confidence in yourself. I probably did not think it would go this well at the start, to have four goals, so I am delighted but I have to say thanks to my team-mates and we have been working so hard. You can see every game how much it means to us to want to win and to work hard for the manager and the fans, so it has been good.
‘We have such a strong squad and there is so much competition so you have always to stay at the top of your game and work hard every day in training if you want to get into the team.’ The next match is at home, against Newcastle United, but we have to wait two weeks for that with international football now taking over, which means off to England for Mount and an increasing number of his team-mates.

Mason Mount and Declan Rice Friend
It was no surprise that Declan Rice and Mason Mount arrived together when the England squad met at St George’s Park ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifiers. As the chauffeur-driven Mercedes, organized by the Football Association, pulled up outside England’s training center, it was first Mount and then Rice who got out, both grinning widely at what is the fulfillment of a dream, something the pair have talked about since they were small boys: to play in the same senior team together.
The two young stars are, as Rice puts it, “best mates” and became almost inseparable after they first met at Chelsea’s academy 12 years ago. It is a friendship that has endured the trauma of Rice being released by Chelsea when he was just 14 and has developed over the years as both encouraged the other to make it in professional football and in the fierce, relentless competition of the Premier League.
“We’ve spoken about it a lot,” Rice says of the prospect of him and Mount playing for England. “It is something that

As a product of the Blues youth development system, Abraham also has a special place in the heart of many of the club’s fans.
“I never saw myself as a prospect, it was always about playing as much football as I can.
“The two years out on loan were about trying to get experience and work as hard as I could to make sure when I came back I could give myself the best chance to get back to Chelsea and get in the team. That was my goal. The mentality side of football is massive,” said Mount to the Daily Mail.
“Coming through the academy and seeing so many brilliant footballers that I have played with since I was six being moved on and released and having to do something else with their lives was telling. They were technically unbelievable but just didn’t have that mentality side. When you are close or good friends, it’s tough. But my dad always said: ‘That’s football and these things happen. You just have to make sure it’s not you.’
“And he was right. You don’t want to be the boy leaving Chelsea, you want to train like every session is your last session because you know you always have to prove something to people.
“My dad drilled that into me at a young age that you don’t want to get released. You can’t let your foot off the pedal because if you do boys are coming in from overseas that are very talented and they will want to take your place.”
Frank Lampard has played a big role in elevating Mount
If it were not for Frank Lampard, Mount may have not got his chance with the Blues this season. The youngster was taken out on loan by Lampard last season whilst the latter was managing Derby County in the Championship. It was in the Championship where Mount got an opportunity to refine his skills whilst playing at a high level. He was ever-present for the Rams last season and helped them to the Championship promotion playoff final before they fell short at the last hurdle, losing the playoff final to Aston Villa.
Mount now faces a challenge to make the England Euro 2020 squad
After some promising early season form, Mount won his first international cap for England last September. However, his performance against Newcastle recently was not good and prompted some England fans to call up Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish to national team duty over Mount.
At 24-years-old, Grealish is a very mature player and he has led Villa with dynamism this season even though Dean Smith’s side find themselves locked in the relegation battle. If Grealish manages to prevent Villa from being relegated this season, it will be hard for Gareth Southgate to leave out the midfielder from his Euro 2020 squad. Similarly, if Mount manages to impress and lead Chelsea convincingly to a top-four finish, it will be hard for the England boss to leave him out.
