Mary Wambui and Mwai Kibaki

She is allegedly Kibaki’s second wife. The Wambui family claim that Mwai married Mary in 1972 under Kikuyu customary law and have a daughter, Wangui Mwai.

In 2004 the media reported that Kibaki has a second spouse allegedly married under customary law, Mary Wambui, and a daughter, Wangui Mwai. After the news broke, the State House released an unsigned statement that Kibaki’s only immediate family is his wife, Lucy and their four children.

In 2009, Kibaki, accompanied by a furious Lucy Kibaki, held a press conference to re-state to the world that he only has one wife. Although officially denied status as a wife, Wambui is provided with all the trappings of a presidential spouse including armed bodyguards and limousines.

Mary Wambui Chair National Employment Authority

Former Othaya MP Mary Wambui has defended her appointment as the chair of the National Employment Authority amid criticism over her age.

Ms Wambui said she deserves the post as much as anyone else. In fact, she insisted that she is the most qualified hence her appointment.
She was appointed to chair the Authority in a gazette notice issued by Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani.

“I got the post because I am better than those complaining. I have the qualifications and experience to run the office,” the former legislator said when contacted.

Recent state appointments of former Nyeri legislators have sparked criticism especially from the youth who have accused the government of overlooking the younger generations.

Ms Wambui’s appointment comes barely a week after the National Assembly approved former Nyeri Town MP Esther Murugi, 66, to sit in the National Lands Commission.

The two appointments have elicited sharp criticism from local youth who now feel they have no place in the Jubilee administration.

Mary Wambui KOT

Kenyans cannot comprehend why President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed former Othaya Member of Parliament Mary Wambui to be the Chairperson of the National Employment Authority for the next three years.

A special Gazette Notice of October 14, announced that Labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani had appointed the former MP, Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso’s widower Edwin Jacob Abonyo and several others to State appointments.
Wambui takes over the from Ms Winnie Pertet who served as NEA chair from its inception till the end of her term.

The authority was established in April 2016 by an act of Parliament to replace the National Employment Bureau (NEB).

Leading the disgruntled voices condemning Wambui’s appointment is Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga who, in a Facebook post, claimed that the former MP has limited knowledge on the intricate challenges unemployed graduates are grappling with.

Mary Wambui And Millicent Omanga

Millicent Omanga had this to say on her  facebook

“Indeed a sad day for the youth of this country… The Appointment of ex Othaya MP Mary Wambui to head National Employment Authority is a spat on the face of the Kenyan youth. You can’t convince me that someone who is intellectually ungifted and has limited knowledge on the intricate challenges unemployed graduates are grappling with will be in a position to craft strategies and policy formulations to help eradicate unemployment in this country. Does Wambui even have the remotest idea of what it feels to hold a degree certificate yet you can’t find a job with it?
She is many things… Rich, Powerful, Connected and all. There are many things she is capable but not this. It’s now clear that unemployment in Kenya is not taken seriously”
