COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) — The action wasn’t inside Columbus City Hall Tuesday, but instead, it was virtual to limit social interaction as another COVID-19 death hits the Columbus area.
“We have had our second death, a 71-year-old male with underlying health conditions. So we never want to forget that there are real human lives involved in all of this,” said Columbus Public Health Policy Director Edward Johnson. Community members got to ask city council members and other leaders questions during the virtual town hall.
Columbus Public Health leaders announced that of the 228 cases in their Worthington and Columbus jurisdiction, more than a quarter are healthcare workers.
“83 percent of our cases are individuals between the age of 20 and 59 years old,” said Johnson The health team talks with local hospitals frequently to get status updates.
“Our hospitals are currently at 50 to 75 percent of their bed capacity,” he said. On top of that, there were many questions regarding evictions and rent during the outbreak.
Council Member Shayla Favor said at this time the council can’t put a freeze on evictions or payments like rent or mortgage, after getting a lot of requests and questions from community members.
We have an official opinion from our City Attorney’s Office that indicates that a filing moratorium is not allowed,” said Favor. But, they are waiting for more guidance from the state.
While she said evictions can still be filed, hearings are delayed. “All eviction hearings will be stayed for at least the next 8 weeks,” said Favor, regarding a decision made earlier. There was also a discussion about the status of utilities for Columbus neighbors.
