Penny was one of three co-founders of Good Hair Day, set up in 2001. He invested £15,000 in the business after a hairdresser friend showed him the styling iron he had been sent by a Korean inventor.
Celebrity endorsements have boosted sales of GHD’s range of products. In 2007, a £160m management buyout was launched by Penny, backed by Montague Private Equity.
He made more than £21.3m from selling down his stake but left its Skipton parent company, Jemella Group, in 2008. The Sunday Times Rich List valued his net worth at £62 million.
