Martin Garrix was born on May 14, 1996 as MartinGerard Garritson to parents Gerard and Karin Garritsen in Amstelveen, Netherlands. Garrix’s father played guitar and although he was never a professional musician, it was enough for Garrix to fall in love with music and string instruments. At first, he released his first tracks titled BFAM and Just A Few Loops, collaborating with Julian Jordan and TV Noise respectively. He released these tracks shortly after meeting his childhood mentor, Tiësto.
In 2012 Martin signed his first contract with the Dutch label Spinnin’ Records. Shortly after signing with the label, he released his first title under the label titled Error 404, collaborating with Jay Hardway. Two years later, he performed at Ultra Music Festival, starring the music festival as the youngest DJ to perform at the event at the age of 17. The same year, he dropped the title. On August 26, 2015, Martin left Spinnin’ Records due to a dispute over the rights and ownership of his music. He also left MusicAllStars Management, the company that ran him during his time at Spinnin’ Records, then sued his former manager Eelko Van Kooten. At the end of 2015, Martin announced that he would start his own label.
In early 2016, Martin Garrix announced the launch of his new label, StmpdRcrds. He released his first track under his new label on March 11, 2016, titled Now That I Found You. The song featured the vocals of MichelZitron and John Martin. Later in 2016, Martin signed with Sony Music International. In 2018, he led the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, where he played the closing role during the ceremony.
