Martika Parents: Meet Gil Marrero and Marta Marrero

Marta Marrero, better known as Martika, was born on May 18, 1969. She is a pop singer and actress from the United States who rose to international prominence in the late 1980s and early 1990s. During this period, she created two tremendously successful albums, each of which sold over four million copies worldwide.

“Toy Soldiers,” one of her biggest successes, reaching number one on the American list for two weeks in mid-1989. Martika is also well-known for her portrayal as Gloria on the hit children’s show Kids Incorporated.

Marta’s career in show business began with an uncredited role as one of the girls in the 1982 film Annie.

This led to her casting as Gloria on Youngsters Incorporated, a long-running children’s show about a group of neighborhood youngsters who rose to prominence by staging theatrical shows at a corner malt shop.

Marta formally acquired the stage name Martika Marrero in the second season of the show, which she later abbreviated to Martika. Martika and other Kids Incorporated cast members appeared in the musical parts of Mr. T’s motivational film “Be Somebody… or Be Somebody’s Fool!” in 1984.

Martika signed with Columbia Records after appearing on Kids Incorporated and in the Mr. T video. “We Are Music,” her first solo single, was only available in Japan as a promotional song for Sony cassette cassettes.
