He graduated from Michigan in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and became a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity.
He married Susan Elkin, his undergraduate sweetheart, and they relocated to Greenwich, Connecticut, where they reared their two children. In 2000, they divorced, and he finally returned to Manhattan. He married Stephanie Mikesell in 2003, and they had two children in 2006 and 2008.
Mark Madoff Suicide Note: Bernie And Ruth Madoff Son Death Cause
Mark’s wife Stephanie Mack describes how a privileged existence in one of America’s wealthiest families transformed into a living nightmare after Madoff’s Ponzi scheme was exposed in a harrowing and emotional interview to be shown Friday on “20/20.”
After two-year of his father Bernie’s imprisonment, Mark Madoff committed suicide, according to Stephanie. She also tells for the first time that Mark attempted suicide in 2009.
The Madoff family’s good times came to an end in December of 2008.
After their father revealed to them that his $65 billion investment fund was a Ponzi scam, the double-digit returns customers had gotten year after year were fraudulent. Mark and his brother Andrew reported him in.
Angry investors sued Mark Madoff for $65 million he earned from Bernie Madoff throughout his lifetime. His assets were blocked, and the bankruptcy court ordered him and Stephanie to live on a monthly stipend.
Mack claims that her emotionally sensitive husband fell into a severe melancholy as a result of the constant scrutiny from the public and media.
He took anti-anxiety and anti-insomnia medications and got fascinated with every aspect of the Bernie Madoff scandal.
Mark attempted suicide in October of 2009 but was unsuccessful. Mark had booked himself into a hotel and taken 60 sleeping and anti-anxiety medications after leaving the couple’s Soho residence. The suicide attempt, however, was unsuccessful.
Stephanie received an email from her husband on December 11, two years to the day following his father’s incarceration.
The email’s subject line was “HELP,” and the message’s body read, “Please send someone to look after Nick,” the couple’s 22-month-old son.
“I love you,” the following email simply stated.
Stephanie was terrified and called her stepfather in New York, who discovered Mark Madoff’s body hanging from a ceiling beam.

Stephanie Mack worked as an editorial assistant at George magazine following graduating in 1996. When the magazine went out of business in 2001, she went to work as an assistant for fashion designer Narciso Rodriguez.
A friend hooked her up on a blind date with Mark Madoff, who had just divorced, and the two married in 2003. Mack wrote The End of Normal, a memoir of her life so far, in 2011.
Irving Picard sued Mack and Deborah Madoff, her brother-in-law Andrew Madoff’s separated wife, in 2012 to collect funds to repay her father-in-swindled law’s clients. In 2017, they struck an agreement with the trustee.
Susan Elkins, her husband’s first wife, had amassed her money early enough that she was entitled to keep it, according to the bankruptcy court.
