Mark William Latham (born 28 February 1961) is an Australian writer and former politician who served as leader of the Australian Labor Party in the Federal Parliament and Leader of the Opposition from December 2003 to January 2005. He was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
Despite garnering widespread media coverage as well as early high levels of popular support for his ideas and unorthodox style, Latham was dogged by controversy due to his personal and political history. John Howard, the incumbent Prime Minister at the time of the 2004 federal election, beat Latham in the race for his seat. On 18 January 2005, he resigned as Leader of the Opposition and as Member of Parliament for Werriwa due to deteriorating ties with his party and poor health, prompting a by-election won by Chris Hayes.
It was in September 2005 that Latham published The Latham Diaries in which he attacked several of his former colleagues and members of the media, in addition to criticising the overall condition of political life in Australia. His book A Conga Line of Suckholes, as well as a regular column in the Australian Financial Review and Spectator Australia, and an article for The Monthly, have all been published since that time.
