Marillion (/mrljn/) is a British rock band founded in 1979 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. They are regarded as the most successful neo-progressive rock band to come from the United Kingdom in the 1980s. To date, they have sold over 15 million records. Since 1982, they’ve released seventeen studio albums, which are divided into two periods marked by the departure of founding singer Fish in late 1988 and the following entrance of successor Steve Hogarth in early 1989. Between 1983 and 1994, the band had eight Top Ten UK albums, including a Number One album in 1985 with Misplaced
Childhood, and eleven Top 40 singles on the UK Singles Chart during Fish’s tenure as frontman, including 1985’s “Kayleigh,” which reached No. 2 and became their greatest hit single. The band’s first album with Hogarth, 1989’s Seasons End, was another Top Ten hit, and albums continued to chart well until their departure from EMI following the release of their 1996 live album Made Again and the decline of the band’s mainstream popularity in the late 1990s; they have essentially been a cult act since then, save for a brief resurgence in the mid- to late-2000s. With Hogarth, Marillion had a total of twelve Top 40 hit singles in the UK, including “You’re Gone,” which peaked at No. 7 in 2004 and is the band’s greatest success to date. The band is still touring worldwide and is now rated 38th in the world.
