When she passed away, she was 39 years old.

In her heartbreaking testimony before the Board for the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Cultural, Religious, and Linguistic Communities in 2020, Bothma disclosed the physical and sexual violence she experienced as a child.

She described upsetting incidents, including being made to “suck on the breasts” of Ruth Combrink and Elizabeth Vermaak, the daughters of church leader Erlo Stegen.

Bothma described the pain of her early life when she endured the punishment for reporting the abuse, including drinking pepper water.

While the mission had previously disputed charges of abuse, attributing them to particular people rather than the mission, Bothma’s evidence revealed the systemic nature of the mistreatment she suffered in her home and at the mission’s school.

She bravely made her adoptive father’s sexual assault public, but he escaped punishment by running away despite the mission’s assertions that it was addressing the problem.
