Marie-Mai was born to an actor father. Marie-interest Mai in music began in her childhood when she took piano lessons and participated in musical theater. Her grandmother noticed her talent after she began singing.
She would later assist Marie-Mai in furthering her singing abilities. Her grandmother suggested that she audition for a new competition called Star Académie at the time. Prior to this, in 2001, she began performing in shows at Montreal’s Théâtre Musical in the Passion intense show.
She was a finalist in the 2003 edition, and her pop-rock style immediately drew attention to her. She finished third, behind competition runner-up Marie-Elaine Thibert and eventual winner Wilfred Le Bouthillier.
After the Star Académie tour concluded in 2004, she joined the cast of Jonathan Larson’s rock-opera musical Rent, which was performed at the Olympia Theatre in Montreal.
She married her producer, Fred St-Gelais, in Hawaii in September 2011. Since 2006, the couple has been engaged. The couple split up in early 2016 and later divorced.
Marie-Mai took part in the anti-bullying campaign a finit là (“It ends here”) in December 2011, and made a video in which she revealed that she had been bullied because of her ADHD.
Marie-Mai has been dating La Voix musical director David Laflèche since 2016, and their daughter Gisèle was born on February 15, 2017.
