Born in 1948 in Brooklyn, New York City, he is best known as the founder of Millennium Management LLC, a global investment management firm. Of Jewish ancestry, Englander had developed an interest for the stock exchange at a very young age. As a college student he had already started trading stocks and then went on to work for the New York Stock Exchange and Oppenheimer & Co. as an intern. In 1970, he took a degree in finance from New York University. After a futile attempt to get an MBA from the same university, he landed a full-time job at Kaufmann, Alsberg & Co. He purchased a seat on the exchange once the American Stock listed options. In 1977, Englander formed a floor brokerage house called I.A. Englander & Co where he is still minority shareholder. Eight years later, he set up the investment firm Jamie Securities Co. along with John Mulheren Jr. Whereas in 1989, he established Millennium Management LLC together with Ronald Shear with $35 million in capital. Ever since, the company has evolved into a multi-billion dollar business that makes profits through the use of low-risk management strategies. As of November 2013, it employed 1,300 people, had approximately $20.1 billion in assets under management, and its offices are spread across the United States, Europe, and Asia. Married with three children, Israel Englander currently resides in New York City. His Englander foundation donated $20 million to charities including Jewish schools and organizations alone in 2016.
