Maria Stephanos Biography|Maria Stephanos Wiki

Maria Stephanos is an American journalist. She currently works WCVB Channel 5. She also serves as a co-anchor of NewsCenter 5, Chief Meteorologist Harvey Leonard, and Sports Anchor Mike Lynch. Previously, she was a news anchor and reporter at Boston’s WFXT-TV. She has covered news from every part of the community and all over the world. Maria was also honored with the Associated Press Award in 2000 for her work in reporting. She has interviewed various celebrities and also a few former presidents of America. Maria is counted on as one of Boston’s most experienced broadcast journalists.

Stephanos has transformed herself from a public radio washout into Boston’s most glamorous, talked-about—and stunning anchor. Maria says that the most memorable local person she has interviewed was average everyday people who have fought through adversity. “Wow, there are so many.

Susan Lane of Natick. She lost both hands and feet after infection but all it did to her was strengthen her spirit. A true inspiration. And Samuel Bernstein, an Iwo Jima survivor who gave me a lesson in history you could never get from any school. I love the people here.”

She has always been able to charm. She inherited that from her father, a beauty salon designer, and salesman who was good at getting people to open up when their impulse was to slam the door in his face.

Her grandmother was a “talk radio addict” and among her favorites were Gene Burns and Jerry Williams, but the death of Elvis Presley may have been her first real news awakening. “My parents were transfixed to the television. I’d never seen them so focused on something. It captured my attention.”

At the mere age of three, she had a stroke. Thus, you can conclude that she had a very critical time in her early childhood. Maria’s first job was waitressing at the Village Pancake House in Rowley Ma. She also worked at the Club Casino at Hampton Beach where she saw some of the greatest bands and comedians for free.

A native of Groveland, MA, Maria is a graduate of Emerson College in Boston where she received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in mass communications.

Stephanos’s interest in storytelling took her to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and then to Emerson College, where she says she soared. “I never set out to be on TV, I just wanted to be a reporter or even someone behind the scenes handling the equipment.”

Her first real journalism gig was as a reporter covering the State House for oh-so-serious WBUR and other public radio stations. She made $15,600 a year.

Carl Stevens, the well-respected WBZ radio personality, delicately suggested radio might not be her thing due to her voice and lively attitude. Perhaps, he said, Maria should try TV.

She didn’t have a radio voice, but she sure had a TV face. Plus, she had a reporter’s background. WJAR signed Maria and sent her to cover fires and murders and blizzards. So, she worked at WJAR, and then WFXT for about 18 Years.

Maria Stephanos Illness|Is Maria Stephanos Sick

Back on August 20, 2009, Maria Stephanos had “sprung right back to life” after being re-hydrated at a local hospital after collapsing in the station’s newsroom this morning, reports her hubby.

Dale Stephanos told the Track that Maria, who ran five miles this morning before her shift, called him from her car on the way to the Dedham studio and told him she was “disoriented, nauseous, and she felt like she was going to pass out.” He also said she told him she “couldn’t feel her hands.”

“She couldn’t pull over because of all the construction but she finally made it to FOX, she dropped and they called 911,” said Stephanos, who got to the station and rode with his wife to a local hospital.

“They got an IV into her pretty quickly and she sprung right back to life,” said the illustrator, joking that his bride “successfully weaseled her way into a day off.”

Dale said Maria, who is being released shortly, was “feeling hungry” when he left the hospital to grab his bride’s purse from the station. “That’s sort of the default setting for any Greek mother,” laughed Stephanos.
