Marco Casagrande Urban Acupuncture

The way towards the Third Generation City is a process of becoming a collective learning and healing organism and to reconnect the urbanized collective consciousness with nature. In Taipei, the wall between the city and the river must go. This requires a total transformation from the city infrastructure and from the centralized power control. Otherwise, the real development will be unofficial. Citizens on their behalf are ready and are already breaking the industrial city apart by themselves. Local knowledge is operating independently from the official city and is providing punctual third generation surroundings within the industrial city: Urban Acupuncture for the stiff official mechanism. The weak signals of the unofficial collective consciousness should be recognized as the futures’ emerging issues; futures that are already present in Taipei. The official city should learn how to enjoy acupuncture, how to give up industrial control in order to let nature step in. The local knowledge based transformation layer of Taipei is happening from inside the city, and it is happening through self-organized punctual interventions. These interventions are driven by small scale businesses and alternative economies benefiting from the fertile land of the Taipei Basin and of leeching the material and energy streams of the official city. This acupuncture makes the city weaker, softer and readier for a larger change. The city is a manifest of human-centered systems – economical, industrial, philosophical, political and religious power structures. Biourbanism is an animist system regulated by nature. Human nature as part of nature, also in the urban conditions. The era of pollution is the era of industrial urbanism. The next era has always been within the industrial city. The first generation city never died. The seeds of the Third Generation City are present. Architecture is not an art of human control, it is an art of reality. There is no other reality than nature.

Explore ruins in Taiwan with Finnish architect Marco Casagrande

The exhibition, “Marco Casagrande: Who Cares, Wins the Third Generation City”, started on April 21 at the Jut Art Museum

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Finnish architect Marco Casagrande is not only an environmental artist who has dedicated himself to green building projects, as he has visited Taiwan for several times, he is also an explorer of ruins in Taiwan that are often left forgotten by city dwellers.

The exhibition, “Marco Casagrande: Who Cares, Wins the Third Generation City”, started on April 21 at the Jut Art Museum (忠泰美術館) presents a variety of projects Casagrande has undertaken since 1999, including building models, sketches, photos, and installations.

The exhibition surrounds the idea of “The Third Generation”, proposed by Casagrande as to envision a future world where human beings, nature, and cities can co-exist harmoniously.

The idea seems to have originated from his first visit to Taiwan in 2003. While he toured around the Treasure Hill in Taipei, a former military dependent’s village now half inhabited by local people and half transformed into artists’ studios and public spaces, Casagrande saw how residents built their houses and irrigation systems with materials at hand and set up farms in a big city as Taipei.

In addition, the exhibition also includes a few projects Casagrande has conducted in the ruins around Taiwan over the years, including the Ruin Academy in Taipei. For this project, Casagrande led a team of young enthusiasts to regenerate a four-floor house in Ximen which was to be torn down soon.

According to the museum, the exhibition also showcases the architect’s studio. Built by Casagrande himself, visitors will be able to see how the architect works in such a studio and comes up with unique design and works. The exhibition will run through August 5.
