Walton and his father became the first father and son to have both won multiple NBA championships: Bill won in 1977 and 1986, and Luke in 2009 and 2010.

Luke Walton Siblings

He is the brother of Nathan Walton, Chris Walton, and Adam Walton.

Luke Walton Wife

On August 17, 2013, Walton married long-time girlfriend Bre Ladd. The two met at the University of Arizona, she was a standout middle blocker on the university’s volleyball team.

Luke Walton Teams Coached

Walton’s first coaching experience was with the University of Memphis. The University of Memphis hired him as an assistant coach during the 2011 NBA lockout. He remained an assistant at Memphis until the lockout was over.

Following his retirement, Walton was hired as a player development coach by the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League, joining the team in November 2013 for the 2013–14 season. The following year Walton became an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors.

Walton joined the Warrior staff on July 3, 2014. The Warriors won the 2015 NBA Finals after they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games to give Walton his third NBA championship and first as a coach.

During the 2015–16 training camp in October 2015, Walton was appointed as the Warriors interim head coach when Steve Kerr took an indefinite leave of absence to rehabilitate his back that had been bothering him after the NBA Finals. On April 29, 2016, the Lakers hired Walton to become their new head coach once the Warriors’ season ended in the 2016 NBA Finals, replacing Byron Scott.

Luke Walton On Lakers

On April 29, 2016, the Lakers hired Walton to become their new head coach once the Warriors’ season ended in the 2016 NBA Finals. He replaced Byron Scott.

Lakers finally did what they’ve been expected to do for months on Friday: they fired Luke Walton as their head coach. They might have dressed it up as if they “mutually parted ways,” but the end

result is the same. Walton was the Lakers coach on Thursday. He is not on Friday.

And now, the entire NBA world is mocking them for their organizational incompetence. Some blasted them for firing Walton under such dire circumstances. It’s not as if he was given a championship-caliber roster, but one of the primary builders of that roster, Rob Pelinka, is widely expected to remain with the team and lead the search for his replacement. Others ridiculed the Lakers for choosing Pelinka in the first place. Given how widely loathed he is around the NBA, that isn’t surprising.

The prevailing sentiment was simple: the Lakers have no idea what they’re doing. Whether or not they should have fired Walton is almost irrelevant. The fact that they did so under these circumstances proves what a dysfunctional mess they currently are. Here are the best reactions to Walton’s ouster.

Steve Kerr is very close to Walton. When he needed to reset after back surgery, he entrusted the Golden State Warriors to Walton as one of the younger assistant coaches in all of basketball. His success there is what ultimately got him his first head job, and Kerr didn’t mince words in discussing the horrific state of the Lakers organization. There is no unison in the franchise. It’s every man for himself.

Luke Walton Contracts

On July 12, 2007, Walton was signed by the Lakers to a 6-year, $30 million contract. The Lakers then made three straight runs to the NBA Finals; they lost to the Celtics in 2008, but defeated the Magic in 2009 and Celtics in 2010 to win back-to-back championships. This gave Walton two championships as a player, the same amount his father won.

The new deal, which came together less than a week after firing Byron Scott, was first reported on Friday evening. But it wasn’t until Saturday that the terms of the deal were released: five years (four guaranteed) with a base of $5 million per season.

Luke Walton Draft

He was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2003 NBA draft with the second pick of the second round (32nd overall). Walton was a favorite of Lakers fans during his nine-year stint as a selfless, hard-working reserve player.

Luke Walton And Bill Walton

After the 2010 NBA Finals, Walton and his father, Hall of Famer Bill Walton, became the first father and son to have both won multiple NBA championships: Bill won in 1977 and 1986, and Luke in 2009 and 2010.

Luke Walton UCLA

Luke Walton is heavily believed to be in murky waters following the regular season, likely to be axed out as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers once the 2018-19 campaign comes to a close. According to Ric Bucher of Bleacher Report, Walton could go from one Los Angeles hotbed to another in UCLA, with his father, Bruins legend Bill Walton, pulling the strings.

Former head coach Steve Alford was fired as UCLA’s coach in his sixth season right before welcoming the new year, as the Bruins fell in a four-game skid that included home losses to Belmont and Liberty. Alford’s assistant, Murry Bartow, is serving as the interim coach through the end of the season, making it possible for Walton to grab the head coaching job.

The Bruins (16-13, 9-7) are third in the Pac-12 conference. Walton, an Arizona product, should be plenty familiar with the inner workings of the conference to arise as a prospective candidate should the Lakers move on from him at season’s end.

Luke Walton Rings

With a Hall-of-Fame father in Bill Walton, many expected Luke Walton to approach some sort of his own greatness. And he finally did in 2010, when the Waltons became the first father and son to both have won multiple NBA championships (Bill in 1977 and 1986, and Luke in 2009 and 2010).

But while Bill won NBA Finals Most Valuable Player in ’77, Luke has mostly warmed the bench for both of the Lakers’ runs. Like father, almost like a son.
