Lucy Tyler-Sharman (born Lucy Tyler on June 6, 1965 in Louisville, Kentucky) is an Olympic and World Champion cyclist from Australia. Tyler was a talented athlete as a youngster, focusing on swimming in junior high and subsequently triathlons. While residing in Florida, she began competing in criterium races before switching to velodrome competitions in 1988. She began training and racing in Australia in 1990, originally residing in New South Wales. During this time, she married Martin Vinnicombe, a track rider. In 1991, while training at the Trexlertown Velodrome in Pennsylvania, Canadian drug testers reported a positive drug test for Martin Vinnicombe at the request of his Australian colleagues.
Martin’s career came to an end as a result of this, but Lucy moved to Australia the next year and represented the state at the 1993 national championships in Alice Springs, winning the sprint and 10 km scratch races. She earned an Australian Institute of Sport sprinting scholarship in 1994 and went on to represent Australia at the World Championships in Sicily, where she finished fourth. She participated in the World Championships in Colombia the following year, finishing eighth in the solo pursuit and 19th in the sprint. In May 1995, she married Western Australian rider Graham Sharman and relocated to Perth. In December 1995, national coach Charlie Walsh persuaded her to switch to full-time track endurance events. Her chances of a strong performance in the February 1996 national championships in Perth were thwarted when she had a severe asthma attack while competing in the points race. She was in a good mood.
