Lucy Martin Early Life

The BBC weather presenter was born with only one hand and grew normally as any other kid since she saw it to be something normal. Most of her teachers and fellow students would ask her what had happened to her hand while in school and being a child she would say that she was born like that and thereafter they became used to it and saw her for who she was.

During an interview, Martin said that she did everything that other kids around her did and never felt like she was held back. She also added saying that she would ride bikes, swim, played musical instruments as well as dance, and do drama.

Lucy said that she was perhaps a bit over capable while in the nursery as she remembers that she would even tie the other children’s shoelaces for them and cut up their lunches.

Lucy Martin Prosthetic and Bionic Arm

Lucy, the BBC reporter explained why she hated bionic or prosthetic arm. As she recalls it, while she was very young, her mother took her to the hospital to be fitted with a prosthetic arm but was unable to get on with it. According to her mum, Martin would spend most of her time taking it off and putting it in the toy box.

Later in primary, Lucy was fitted with a movable prosthetic hand. She would go to appointments to learn how to use it before she finally took it home. Once she had taken it home, she took it to school and did a “show and tell” of it to almost the whole school but by the next day she had decided that she never needed it since it was too heavy.

Lucy Martin BBC

From the start, Lucy was always fascinated by the weather. Being British, she also loved geography and the variety and breadth of topics that came within it. It was for these reasons that she did a degree in Geography. It was during her classes in Geography studies that she studied meteorology which made her yearn to learn more about meteorology.

While Martin was visiting her friend’s home, her mum saw an advert from the BBC about the initiative and she decided to apply without any hesitation. Surprisingly, she was given a space on a three-day workshop in July 2015. The workshop was quite intense – there’s a lot more involved in weather presenting than perhaps initially meets the eye.

There were lots of different sessions, including voice coaching and storytelling. She met with a mentor to help guide her through the day and tell her more about what the job was like. She also got to spend time with a make-up artist and be in the studio actually practicing presenting.

When presenting the weather, you don’t have an autocue or a script, and you mostly use a green screen, so you have to get used to talking without being prompted and pointing at the right place!

Lucy Martin Journalism

When she was asked if she ever dreamt of becoming a weather presenter, Lucy said that she actually thought that presenting looked great but imagined working in an office. She also said that it was thanks to her disability that she landed the job in the first place and that she never felt left behind but lucky.

With lots of hard work and thanks to the training, Martin has ended up doing it full time. In every workplace, there are always setbacks and despite Lucy being high spirited and getting motivation from most of her fans she also had her low points where she received very nasty comments though not as much.

Martin also works alongside Jameela Jamil who is a BBC news anchor.

Lucy Martin Icon Award

Lucy says that she was really happy to b nominated for the Icon Award. Icon Award is an award that recognizes people who champion diversity. She said that she felt that despite the lots of good work to improve representation, disability is still underrepresented on TV and in the media.

She was really glad to be one of the front runners to change it. Lucy said that she had received lots of lovely messages of support from people saying that her work has had a positive impact on them or people they know, so to be nominated for an Icon Award by the public really solidified that.

Unfortunately, Martin couldn’t attend the ceremony as it was her granny’s 80th birthday and she couldn’t miss that!
