Farewell to a Musical Legend: Lord Creator’s Obituary
The world of music mourns the loss of calypsonian, ska, and rocksteady artist Lord Creator, who passed away at the age of 87. His wife, Neseline Patrick, confirmed his death, stating that he had been unwell for some time.
Born Kenrick Patrick, Lord Creator achieved fame with his iconic single “Kingston Town,” which was later covered by the British band UB40 in 1989 and went on to achieve platinum status in the UK.
Throughout his life, Lord Creator faced numerous health challenges. He experienced two strokes, with the last one occurring in 2005. He also battled prostate problems, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and underwent back surgery in 2013. In 2019, his ability to walk gradually declined until he could no longer walk at all, according to Neseline Patrick.
Lord Creator fathered 15 children, eight of whom are still alive. He shared a 31-year relationship with Neseline, legally marrying for 23 of those years. Patrick expressed her deep sense of loss and stated that she will greatly miss her beloved husband.
Olivia Grange, the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport, acknowledged Lord Creator’s significant contributions to Jamaican music. She highlighted his popular song “Independent Jamaica,” which perfectly captured the joyous spirit of the country upon gaining independence 61 years ago.
Lord Creator’s immense impact on Jamaican music was recognized when he was awarded the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) in 2022, a well-deserved honor bestowed upon him by the Minister of Culture. Grange expressed her condolences to Neseline and the rest of Lord Creator’s family, relatives, and friends, emphasizing that his music will continue to live on and be cherished by the Jamaican people. She acknowledged his role in immortalizing the spirit of Jamaican independence in song, stating, “Rest in peace, Lord Creator.”
Born in Trinidad in 1935, Lord Creator migrated to Jamaica in the 1960s after achieving success with several hits in his homeland. He quickly made a name for himself in ska and rocksteady music and gained national recognition with his release of “Independent,” a song celebrating Jamaica’s independence from Britain in 1962.
Regarded as one of the pioneers of ska, Lord Creator is remembered for his captivating hits such as “Big Bamboo,” “Little Princess,” and “Jamaica Farewell.” In 1970, he recorded “Kingston Town” under the production of Clancy Eccles. The song was an interpolation of one of his earlier compositions, “Babylon,” which he had created as a teenager in Trinidad and later recorded for Randys in 1963 with a ska beat.
“Kingston Town” would become Lord Creator’s most significant hit, etching his name into the annals of music history. He would have celebrated his 88th birthday on August 21 of this year, a testament to a life dedicated to his craft and the love he shared through his music. Lord Creator’s legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of his fans and admirers, leaving an indelible mark on the world of music.
