Loise Lear BBC News

BBC Weather has forecast temperatures to dip as a low-pressure weather system barrels across the continent. This week much of Europe was scorched by a blistering heatwave, with record-breaking temperatures being reached in a number of countries. But, BBC Weather forecaster Louise Lear has predicted a huge change in the weather, as thunderstorms sweep across the continent.

She said: “Heatwave conditions are easing in Europe as we move through the weekend. An area of low pressure is moving through the Atlantic, and this cold front is squeezing that extreme heat up into Scandinavia.

“It will though spark off some pretty intense thundery downpours, as we go through the weekend.

“On Saturday, we can see through northern Spain, the Pyrenees, into France, the low countries, Germany, across to the Alps, some torrential thundery downpours are likely, may well lead to some localized flash flooding.

“Now, through the Mediterranean across Turkey, Greece, across southern Italy, it’s fine and settled.

“The same too for Corsica, Sardinia the Balearics and for southern Spain where we are likely to see temperatures from mid to high-20’s.

“A much more comfortable feel in Paris, 22C, that heat now squeezing its way up into Scandinavia where we could see the high-20’s, low-30’s quite likely.”

Moving into Sunday, the BBC Weather forecaster said: “So, as we move through Sunday we have still got those thunderstorms threatening – this time across Italy.

“Through the Balkans and I suspect again, torrential thundery downpours are likely.

“Drier, brighter and more comfortable though conditions out to the west.

Loise Lear Temperatures

“That is going to be the story next week as you can see for London and Paris. Madrid stays pretty consistent, low-30C’s likely for the next few days.

“Out to the east, we keep some thundery showers going in Berlin, but those temperatures will start to ease.”

Temperatures in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands all reached record highs in the low-40C’s mark this week. Paris also saw a record high temperature of 42.6C on Thursday.

A record temperature for July was also set in Britain, as thermometers reached 38.1C on Thursday in Cambridge.

The temperature in Britain made it the second hottest day of all time, just falling short of the record of 38.5C reached in 2003.

On Friday afternoon the Met Office said Thursday, July 26 could have been the hottest day on record in the UK after receiving a provisional figure of 38.7C at Cambridge University Botanic Garden.

In a tweet, the Met Office said: “It will be quality controlled & if validated would be the highest temperature officially recorded in the UK.”

The heatwave in the UK caused major travel disrupted with trains forced to run at a reduced speed – as customers were urged not to travel if they could help it.

Temperatures in the UK are expected to plunge this weekend with highs of 23C on Saturday – a 15C difference from temperatures on Thursday in some parts of the country.

BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor warned more heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue to dominate for Scotland, the Midlands and southeast England following the heavy overnight downpours.

He said: “A weather front starts to reinvigorate through the night. Rain becomes more widespread and will become heavy as well and it’s still staying fairly muggy out there as we go through the night and into tomorrow morning.

“Temperatures around 14C to 18C, not quite as warm as it has been. Freshest of the air still waiting out in the west. But as we start the weekend, after the sunshine and heat, a big change for many of you. This weather front will bring outbreaks of rain across a good part of Scotland.

“The far northeast will be the exception, but rain in Scotland, much of northern England, at times in the Midlands, towards East Anglia and the southeast.

“Some of that rain will be on the heavy side. But southwest England, Wales and Northern Ireland will be the exception to this because you’re set with the sunshine through much of Saturday. Temperatures between 18C to 23C at the highest on Saturday and we’ll be doing that again on Sunday.”
