Lisa Aziz Career
Aziz joined TV-am as a reporter in 1988 before presenting news bulletins for the station the following year. She was one of the first half-Asian presenters to be seen on mainstream television, and the first Muslim news presenter. She joined Sky News in 1992, but continued to present bulletins for TV-am, and later went on to become one of the main news presenters at Sky News. In 2004, she won the EMMA Best Television News Journalist Award. She returned to the West Country in 2005, and has since been one of the main presenters of the ITV West main news programme The West Tonight. From 16 February 2009, she became co-presenter of the pan-regional news programme The West Country Tonight, which replaced The West Tonight (ITV West) and Westcountry Live (ITV Westcountry) alongside Steve Scott.
In June 2009, Aziz was reported to have gone on leave from ITV West Country after suffering tendinitis. However, on 10 July it was reported that she had been suspended from her job because of irregularities with her expenses. However, ITV would only say that she had been off work for personal reasons. In mid June 2009, Aziz disappeared from her presenting role, and was replaced by two younger female presenters, Ellie Barker (ITV West) and Claire Manning (ITV Westcountry).
On 10 July 2009, Mail Online reported that Aziz, who by then had not been seen hosting nightly news programme The West Country Tonight for the past month, had been suspended for irregularities with her expenses, one of the irregular items apparently being a £5.75 bill for dry cleaning a child’s top. The Mail report appeared after an article in Private Eye published on 7 July. According to the Daily Mirror the claims amounted to £200. It was also reported that Aziz planned to sue ITV for religious, race and sex discrimination after an alleged prolonged bullying and harassment campaign aimed at forcing her out of the organisation. It was later reported that she had initiated legal proceedings against her employers in response to the allegations, and had lodged complaints about four people at ITV West.
Aziz also said that she had not been suspended, but had been signed off work for three months due to stress caused by the expenses allegations. She also received treatment at the Priory Clinic for work-related stress and depression.
On Wednesday 24 February 2010, The Bristol Evening Post reported that Lisa Aziz had officially left ITV West and had dropped all allegations against the broadcaster. She now lives in south London and works for Global Radio where she has read the morning news on LBC and currently reads the news on Classic FM (UK)
Lisa Aziz Steve Scott
In our article “Newsreader sues ITV for colleague’s ‘racist mimicking’” (22 Nov 09), which referred to an Employment Tribunal claim brought by Lisa Aziz against ITV, we repeated allegations made by Ms Aziz against Steve Scott, the ITV newsreader, including an allegation that Mr Scott had made racially discriminatory remarks about some of his colleagues.
For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to make clear that we did not in any way seek to adopt or endorse any of the claims made against ITV or the allegations made against Mr Scott in particular. As referred to in our article, following an internal investigation by ITV – which it described as “full and thorough” – Mr Scott was cleared of the allegations made against him. We apologise to Mr Scott for any distress caused by any contrary impression our article may have given.

Lisa Aziz Leaves Lbc
Lisa Aziz, 47, has not appeared on the nightly news programme West Country Tonight for the past month. ITV claim the £150,000-a-year broadcaster is off work for ‘personal reasons’, but sources close to Miss Aziz say she has been suspended over allegations of misuse of expenses. It is alleged she faces accusations of gross misconduct after making seven wrongful claims – including a £5.75 bill for dry cleaning a child’s top. Sources close to Miss Aziz said the top was hers not a child’s. They said she she has claimed for dry cleaning and hair and beauty products on expenses without challenge since joining ITV from Sky in 2006.
Miss Aziz, who has two children, Jacob, 10, and Leah, 14, is now on sick leave and is believed to have been in discussions with lawyers about taking legal action against ITV. When approached, Miss Aziz said she was on sick leave with tendonitis, insisting there was “nothing sinister” about her absence from the programme.
“I am off with tendonitis for the foreseeable future, I’m afraid. I had it back in March for a couple of weeks and was surprised I needed to take time off work with it and it has come back,” she said.
Miss Aziz, who lives in Bath and presents West Country Tonight with Steve Scott, has been replaced by two younger presenters since mid-June. Friends of the presenter say she was confronted by ITV head of news Liz Hannam during a meeting on a programme about terrorist suspect Andrew Ibrahim. It is understood she was then suspended from her post on allegations of gross misconduct while the alleged seven wrongful expense claims are investigated. Sources close to the presenter told The Daily Telegraph that she had been a victim of ITV cutbacks.
“As far as the story goes, ITV are doing cutbacks and in those cut backs, they are doing silly things like looking at her expenses,” a source said.
“Lisa is angry with ITV West, someone in the office might have been talking carelessly.”
However, it is claimed ITV breached it’s own employment procedures by suspending Miss Aziz before she had a chance to respond to the allegations.
The presenter is a “family friend” of Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah.
The source added: “It could be sex discrimination, race discrimination, gender discrimination, age discrimination. all these discussions are going on”
She had been working for six weeks on a programme about Ibrahim, the Bristol student on trial for terrorist offences, and was called to a meeting about editing the footage. It was apparently during that meeting with head of news Liz Hannam and a man that the expenses allegations were made. Miss Aziz began her career in Bristol in 1983 at the BBC before going on to become one of the main presenters for Sky News in 1996, where she worked for ten years.
An ITV spokesman said: “ITV never comments on ongoing investigations and follows established and recognised employment procedures. We vehemently deny any allegations relating to discrimination and will vigorously defend our position in this regard.” Last month it was revealed that BBC executives had spent £350,000 of public money on luxury hotels, vintage champagne, “thank you” dinners, parties, and even a private aeroplane.
