Lindsey Caroline Vonn, born October 18, 1984, is a former US Ski Team World Cup alpine ski racer. She won four World Cup overall championships, second only to Annemarie Moser-Pröll among female skiers, with three consecutive titles in 2008, 2009, and 2010, plus another in 2012. Vonn won the first gold medal for an American woman in downhill skiing at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
She also set a World Cup season record with eight downhill titles (2008-2013, 2015, 2016), five super-G titles (2009-2012, 2015), and three consecutive combined titles (2010–2012). In 2016, she won her 20th World Cup crystal globe title, breaking the record held by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden, who won 19 globes from 1975 to 1984. She has the third highest super ranking of any male or female skier.
In 2011, Vonn faced more serious competition from Maria Riesch of Germany after winning three consecutive overall World Cups. Riesch started the season strong, winning two downhills in Lake Louise, where Vonn had won seven races. Vonn finished on the podium in every speed race but did not finish in any of the slaloms. Riesch had five podiums in the first six slaloms and was well ahead of the pack in the overall standings by the end of January.
Vonn suffered a concussion during training a week before the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. She competed in two events, finishing seventh in super-G and silver in the downhill.
