Linda Mtoba Interview with QuenchSA

Shed some light on who is Linda Mtoba?

Linda Mtoba: Linda is a very bubbly person who grew up in Umlazi and I live in Durban North now. I was teaching IsiZulu at a primary school from Grade 1 to Grade 5. Currently studying Marketing Management part-time.

Have you always been passionate about acting?

Linda Mtoba: Funny enough I actually think it came to me because it wasn’t really a career I felt I was destined to go into. I did audition once to be a presenter but I never thought of acting before, my friends seduced me into acting because they said that I was very dramatic…I’ve never done acting nor have I taken an acting class before in my life.

Are acting classes something you planning on doing in the future?

Linda Mtoba: Definitely! The more obviously I get in it. If you are in a craft you have to honour it and do it as best as you can. I am actually in a process of getting an acting coach, just so that I can get better at it.

With the role on Isibaya big your first casting role, has it been difficult fighting off nerves?

Linda Mtoba: You have no idea! Honestly it was so nerve-wrecking. My very first scene was with my family and it also had Iris played by Mampho and Jabu. Every time I had to speak it felt like something was going to come out of my mouth. It was so hectic but they actually comforted me and before I went on they told me to say my words and every thing will be fine, which helped.

What has been the hardest adjustment you’ve had to make since your new found fame?

Linda Mtoba: The hardest adjustment has been that I actually have to be in Jo’burg quite more often. Eventually I have to relocate soon. I go there for work when I’m shooting. Also understanding my lines and script, the lingo, some of the words are foreign to me (laughs).

Do you miss teaching primary school children?

Linda Mtoba: Yes I miss it quite often. I do pop in and say hello. I miss them so much, the kids are so full of life. From working with kids with a few adults to working with adults with no kid is quite an adjustment.

What’s the one thing that people won’t find about you on the internet?

Linda Mtoba: I actually think that I’m quite transparent, it’s there on my Instagram and Snapchat. I’m a loud-mouth, very talkative, someone who likes funny memes…it’s who I am.

Has the cast on Isibaya embraced you?

Linda Mtoba: Yes definitely! I feed of the energy, for instance if I’m in a scene with Thuli Thabethe, who is my mother on Isibaya, her energy is so real, its so convincing that I can’t help but feel like I am talking to my mother.

How are you finding living in Johannesburg?

Linda Mtoba: To be honest I had a bad perception about Johannesburg because I been in Durban my whole life I’ve never lived anywhere else. Jo’burg is this mean place, concrete jungle, now that I’m here I’m finding out that is not the case. My personal misconception of it has completely changed and I’ve actually grown fond of it.

Having thrust yourself into the world of the unknown, what lies in the immediate future for Linda?

Linda Mtoba: I’m just taking it a day at a time, because this has honestly been a whirlwind. I was a teacher one day and then literally the next day I’m acting on Isibaya. I loved it before I was in it and now that I’m in it its become something so surreal, anything that comes after this will literally be a cherry on top.
