Linda Mtoba Interview
Interviewer: Why have you decided to stay in your hometown, Durban and not move to Joburg for Isibaya?
Linda Mtoba: I’ve decided to stay in Durban because everything and everyone I know is here. I was born and bred in Umlazi, raised by my mother Celiwe together with my little brother. We stayed with my aunt, Lihle and her son. My father passed away when I was 13 years old but my stepdad fully took to the father role in my life. He’s always so supportive and raised me as his own. I go to Joburg two or three times a week when Isibaya needs me for scenes and I go back to Durban afterward. To make things convenient I even have an apartment in Jozi.
Interviewer: You were a teacher for a year before moving into acting, why did you make the transition?
I didn’t even know I could act before Isibaya, my friend Nombuso pushed me to audition and luckily the producers liked what I had to offer. I didn’t try too hard to act during the audition, I stuck to being natural, I think that’s what made them cast me as Zama.
Interviewer: Seven months into Isibaya, are you happy with your decision to leave teaching?
Her: I’m enjoying being on Isibaya, it excites me to be part of such a great cast. I love that I’m learning every day about acting, the directors and cast members are patient in grooming me into the skill. I appreciate their patience with me. Starting a new job is always daunting but everyone has been kind and makes me feel like I belong. I’ve found my feet and gained more confidence as an actress.
Linda Mtoba On Interview
Interviewer: What do you love most about your character, Zama?
Linda Mtoba: She’s is not your average girl and has brought a modern vibe to the show, she’s young, fun and knows what she wants. My favorite thing about the character is her confidence and the least is how she’s such a brat. My mother constantly warns me against adopting any of Zama’s spoilt brat tendencies. How are you dealing with your new-found fame? I still get surprised by strangers greeting me, the challenge is figuring out where I know them from in my head. I often forget they know me through Isibaya.
Interviewer: Do you ever miss being a teacher?
Linda Mtoba: I miss my babies (students). I taught isiZulu to grade 1 and 5s. The best thing about being a teacher is how the kids treat you like a superstar. They always express how much they love you and will come and hug and tell you how much they missed you.
