Linda Marsh, an American actress who has appeared in films, on stage, and on television, was born on February 8, 1939, in New York City. The actress was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the 1963 picture America, America, directed by Elia Kazan. The following year, she starred as Ophelia in John Gielgud’s critically acclaimed Broadway production of Hamlet, which also included Richard Burton as Hamlet. The episode “The Case of the Sad Sicilian,” in which she portrayed Elizabeth Bacio, the titular character’s daughter, was one of her first television performances; it aired in 1965 on Perry Mason. Marsh rose to fame as one of the beautiful young actresses who was frequently romanced by the actors of famous television programmes such as The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Wild Wild West, It Takes a Thief, Hawaii Five-O, and I Spy. Marsh was born in New York City and raised in Los Angeles. A departure from the normal pattern for ingenues, Marsh opted to have many rhinoplasties performed after her early achievements rather than altering her look before beginning her professional career, which was uncommon at the time. Although she was already a beautiful lady, the final effect was particularly dramatic, and it opened the way to more glamorous roles in the latter decades of the 1960s. Through the 1970s, she appeared often on television as a guest performer; her last credited appearances were in 1979. Her rare cinematic appearances were Che! and Freebie and the Bean, two of Marsh’s favourite films. In 1970, she appeared in an infamous unreleased X-rated film called Stop!, which was written and directed by Bill Gunn, who had revealed to the press the year before that she would star in the film “…the majority of young Hollywood actresses will go to any length to land the right role – including trading their charms and posing in the bathing suit. However, I am unable to separate my body from my thoughts. Cheesecake is a promotional technique used to get males to visually undress a female. My goal is for people to accept me for who I am, my whole personality, rather than just the Linda Marsh from the neck down. I’m not interested in it any other way.” Marsh received critical praise for her performance as a young lady who is engaged to the story’s ambitious main character but is abandoned during his attempt to move from Greece to the United States in Kazan’s adaptation of his novel “America, America.” The director stated that he chose actors who were Jewish (including Marsh) or Greek to portray the characters in the epic film, which was loosely based on his uncle’s life. He explained that he chose these actors because “all of them know oppression, they all have uncles from the ‘Old World,’ and they all have an affectionate relationship towards their forefathers.” Although her Ophelia garnered mixed reviews, Gielgud was pleased with her performance and refused to have the role replaced despite the fact that additional tryouts were held during rehearsals.
