Linda de Mol Interview

Linda: If John needs me, I’m gone

‘Magazines are dead, except the LINDA’, it sounded ten years ago. And still Linda de Mol’s ladies glossy, who has been focusing on both the cashier and the elite for fifteen years, are selling a sloppy 225,000 copies per issue. Scoring in times of falling sales figures in this market, it drives many publishers to madness. Why is she?

Anniversary number 171, cleverly delivered with blonde Linda wig that now celebrates many celebrities with social media, has just appeared. But nowadays there is so much more rolling out of De Mol’s magazine, such as LINDA.mode, LINDA.wonen and l’Homo. The brand even has a real video on demand platform: LINDA.TV.

Linda de Mol: ,, No, I really did not expect that success ”, she implores. ,, I remember that my mother took the first subscription at the launch party. I was so happy with it, because: we had at least one. ”

Linda de Mol (54), with program titles like Miljoenenjacht, I Love Holland, Do I know a lot? and Oh What A Year, after decades still in the highest regions of the TV-name, excuses itself for the cliché. ,, I do not do this on my own. Here is an extremely hard working and good team behind. I’m sorry, but I want to say that. “”

But back to “why are they?”

Linda de Mol: ,, I thought very carefully, what do I dislike about many other magazines? That I sometimes stay behind with a complex when I close them. I’m not that slim and I do not have that bag at all, I did not even know it existed! It is also often so serious all: oh how we women always have a hard time. Together with Rosemary de Witte, with whom I then started, I wanted to see recognition, surprise, laughter, self-mockery, things from a different angle. And not just stories from celebrities who take a plane from London to Paris to buy those new expensive boots. More ordinary women who experience special things. It is a very strong formula that works from the very beginning and that we guard very strictly. ”

Recently you wrote to have skated a skate. I can imagine that sometimes you think: I have to do such an outpouring again, it is after all a personality sheet.

Linda de Mol: ,, Not every month. And the theme in this is leading. If that ‘affair’ is like last July, you’re going to think: did I have to deal with that and what do I want to say about it? I fully realize that everything I write – and that is indeed sometimes difficult – can become an article that appears everywhere on the internet. As if I myself have sent a press release about, for example, six ounces that I have lost! I also take a good look at myself with some regularity. That self-deprecation disappears when sentences from its context are torn for a juicy headline. ”

But I do not have the idea that half of the Netherlands will fall over you.

Linda de Mol: “Apparently I write it in such a way that people can move in it. That is also my goal: writing as you would do to friends. And I prefer to talk about the things I’m not so good at or that I’m uncertain about. I never write about my success. Never. Nice for you dude, that you were in a five-star hotel in Paris and bought four cashmere sweets. I do not care! ”

And so you are rarely accused of self-glorification …

Linda de Mol : ,, But I sincerely hate that myself. When I look at my friends, they come from all walks of life. From teacher to actress. What we all have in common: hard to laugh at yourself. Humor is also important to LINDA. An article about men with little cocks with the text above them: ‘Pinkeltje cries’ for example. I also like the fact that we are read a lot and often by men. “”

What is the feedback?

Linda de Mol; “That it is not a whimsical magazine. So that was apparently not yet when we started. Look, I think the Vogue is a beautiful magazine with beautiful photography, but I think quickly: oh dear, the clothes do not suit me or 4000 euros for a bag, I do not. Is not it ridiculous to pay so much money for a pair of heels that you can not walk on? That is why it is ultimately for a smaller group of people. I think women can easily identify with me. ”

Have you ever completely misplaced the shelf?

Linda de Mol; ,, We get a lot of comments when it comes to diversity. I do like that. I am white, I am blond and I am on that cover. But where we have those fold-out covers, I think we should pay more attention to them. And then there was that cover of LINDA.meiden on which vloggers Anna Nooshin and Monica Geuze give each other a kiss. I really liked that because of the theme ‘do not think in boxes’. Then we suddenly got baking criticism about us, that we would steal the lesbian’s identity by letting heterosexual women kiss. “”

And? Was that criticism justified?

Linda de Mol: ,, That one had to explain me anyway, because I did not see any harm at all. But I finally understood. On the cover of the l’Homo that followed, there were only gay men. We did not do that for a long time, because when we asked homosexual men who they wanted to see on the cover, we only heard names of heterosexuals. I learn from it. That, and the times are changing. ”

So you decided to grab a topical subject like #metoo.

Linda de Mol: ,, That number we have brought after that whole # metoo affair, because I was a bit finished with it. Good that it all came to light, but … how now? Because I do not want to live in a world where no more erotic tension with a colleague could ever arise. Or where you do not dare anything anymore, because you are afraid to be nailed to the pillory right away. For example, we are increasingly trying to tackle social themes. I as a woman with obesity on the cover, that was really because I read many articles from doctors who said that this is a disease. People then called: at the same time she does the action Linda Lijnt, because she thinks herself a few pounds too heavy. So how can she move in someone with obesity? But it produces a discussion and I think that’s just too crazy. ”

Can there be highlights?

Linda de Mol: ,, That I was on the cover with George Clooney of course! That was about number 1 on my bucket list. And I am very proud of our news site LINDA.news and our video platform LINDA.TV for which 160 own formats have been created. Of course there are also many people working on this. I do not really view any format for approval, it just does not work. But if I see a mistake later – I have a special app for that – I make a screenshot and send it straight away. I’m on top of it. “”

Controlling everything, you often hear that about your brother John de Mol.

Linda de Mol: ,, Oh, but I can release things better and better. In the beginning I fell over every comma, but when the brand expanded more and more … it is simply not to do anymore. It has become too big a company. I also have to think about that: what will happen if I no longer want to be on the cover and no longer want to interfere with the magazine every day? ”

Do you sort that for then?

Linda de Mol: “I have certain philosophies about that, but I want to continue for now. Because I still like it and can occasionally denounce things. The ‘shame shame shame’ song, based on that film by Patricia Paay for example. I have a daughter of 18 who also has to deal with a boyfriend who makes a photo she prefers not to see everywhere online. That subject is therefore important to me. “”

You, your brother John, your nephew Johnny … Will your two children soon also be diving into the media world?

Linda de Mol:,, My daughter has just started her studies at the UVA in Amsterdam: Media & Culture. So yes, he wants to do something in that world. But perhaps she wants more in the journalistic way. And my 21-year-old son is in the last year of the Conservatory, so he is completely into music. Nice that they made a kind of choice at all. So many people at that age have no idea and I understand that. “”

Talk about making choices: media professionals assume that you will soon leave RTL 4 for SBS 6, part of the Talpa TV channel group owned by you brother.

Linda de Mol :,, That is not so logical. I’ll take a look at it. If John says he really needs me hard and hard, then I’m gone. Or if I can do things there that RTL can not do. But I am still busy there with all the programs that I do. I do not exclude that I leave, nor that I sign a year. In any case, I always sign for a year and that will end at the end of June. ”

To what extent do you interfere with the media-related affairs of your brother?

Linda de Mol: ,, Not at all. ” Smiling: ,, I also have to read sometimes that he has bought a company. If I do switch, of course I am going to interfere with what programs I do and at what time they are broadcast. I think that is very important. But you do not know which way it all goes. Maybe I’ll be able to do one program at RTL and the other at SBS 6. “”

You mean a combination of RTL and Talpa TV (SBS 6, Net 5, Veronica)? John de Mol also expressed himself before.

Linda de Mol: ,, I agree very much. I find our country quite small for two very large commercial channel groups. You saw it with John de Mol and Joop van de Ende who were very busy trying to compete with each other until they merged (as Endemol in 1994) and it became a great success. I certainly do not think it is unthinkable. ”

Not inconceivable or inevitable?

Linda de Mol:,, That is up to the situation. If linear TV viewing continues to deteriorate, you might need to be at a certain point. ”
