Lily Rabe participated in a workshop production of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas after making her Broadway debut in the 2005 revival of Steel Magnolias, where she played Annelle Dupuy-Desoto and got a Drama Desk Award nomination.
Later that year, she had her American stage debut in Laura Wade’s Colder Than Here, and from September to December of that same year, she played Ellie Dunn in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of George Bernard Shaw’s Heartbreak House.
In addition to appearing in the play Crimes of the Heart at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in August of the same year, Rabe appeared in the 2007 film No Reservations.
In the 2008 pilot episode of the HBO drama Last of the Ninth, which was written by David Milch and directed by Carl Franklin, she was cast as a plainclothes police officer. Even though Medium’s season was not renewed, Rabe appeared in two films that year—What Just Happened and The Toe Tactic—and two episodes.
She played Portia, one of the classic female characters, in Daniel J. Sullivan’s 2010 production of The Merchant of Venice, where Rabe delivered one of her most memorable stage performances. In this play, she also had her Shakespeare in the Park debut.
