Lewis Largent, a well-known MTV VJ who hosted the program 120 Minutes and was a former music director of the Los Angeles radio station KROQ, has reportedly passed away, according to Variety and the Los Angeles Times.

His family confirmed to Variety that Largent passed away on February 20 after a “long illness.” He was 58.

Largent, a Southern California native who began playing golf as a youth, eventually got a job at a country club.

Then, by chance, he met the general manager of KROQ, who was so impressed by the breadth of Largent’s knowledge of alt-rock that he gave Largent an internship there in 1985.

Largent swiftly moved up the corporate ladder to take the position of music director at the alt-rock station in 1989. In 1992, Largent accepted a job offer from MTV to become a vice president of music programming.

He took over as host of the channel’s alternative music-focused Sunday night program 120 Minutes right away, where he interviewed historical figures from the era such as David Bowie, Radiohead, Pavement, Björk, Trent Reznor, Dinosaur Jr., and PJ Harvey.

Largent transferred hosting responsibilities to Matt Pinfield in 1995 and shifted his focus to production, working his way up to Director of Music Programming at MTV. His later post was Vice President of Music and Artist Development.
