The name in Eastern Slavic is a template. Known as “The Black Spider” or “The Black Panther”, Lev Ivanovich Yashin (born 22 October 1929 in Moscow, Soviet Union; died 20 March 1990 in Moscow) was a Soviet-Russian football goalkeeper who was widely regarded as the greatest in the history of the game. He was nicknamed “The Black Spider” or “The Black Panther” by his teammates and opponents. He was renowned for his agility in goal, as well as his intimidating height and quick reflexes. Aside from that, he served as vice president of the Soviet Union’s Football Federation. Yashin achieved legendary status as a result of his role in changing the goalkeeping position and establishing his dominance over the whole defence. The goalie yelled instructions at his defenders, rushed off his line to intercept crosses, and raced out to meet onrushing attackers, all of which occurred during a period in which goalkeepers spent the whole 90 minutes standing in the goal, waiting to be called upon to do their duties. His performances in the 1958 World Cup, which was the first to be televised worldwide, left an unforgettable impact on a global audience, and because he was clad entirely in black, he earned the moniker “Black Spider,” which further boosted his fame. Yashin played in four World Cups between 1958 and 1970, and in 2002, he was named to the FIFA Dream Team, which represents the greatest players in the history of the World Cup.
As a result, he was named to the FIFA World Cup All-Time Team, and in 1998, he was named to the FIFA World Team of the Twentieth Century. Over the course of his career, he made more than 150 penalty saves and maintained more than 270 clean sheets, earning a Gold medal at the 1956 Olympic football tournament and winning the 1960 European Championships. Yashin was the first goalie to win the European Footballer of the Year title, which he received in 1963, making him the first goalkeeper to do so. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) named him the greatest goalkeeper of the twentieth century.
