Joachim Low’s decision to snub Leroy Sane for World Cup is huge gamble for Germany

He is a player who can bring special qualities to the pitch. We don’t have any other players who can do the things he does.
Maybe you can argue he hasn’t played with the same face for the national team and Joachim Low but he has done it all season.
I reckon 90 per cent of German supporters wanted him in the squad.
There were four players left out from the 27 but nobody was saying a word about the other three.
Sane was the best young player in the Premier League, scored so many goals and was a guaranteed starter for Manchester City — one of the best teams in the world.
Instead, Joachim went with Julian Brandt. He plays for Bayer Leverkusen, a decent Bundesliga team, but they are not close to City.
Something big must have happened. It can’t just be a footballing selection decision.
Joachim is a very strict man. You might say he is a very German guy.
I know he was angry last summer when Sane decided to have an operation rather than play in the Confederations Cup.
Joachim looked at him and decided he wasn’t as committed to Germany and was putting himself ahead of the national team.
He is the national coach. It is his job to make these decisions and I have to respect that.
But if Germany do not do as well as we hope, everyone will say Sane should have been here in Russia. The results will decide if this was a mistake. The German manager is under pressure.
We have not played well since we qualified — just ONE win in six games.
There was a lot of criticism after we lost to Austria last week.
Austria were absolutely focused on the game. It was their World Cup final and it was just a game, a preparation friendly, for us.
We all know that Germany can focus in the important moments. We get our heads right when it matters. Germany have always been able to find their rhythm as the tournament goes on.
When I was a player, and since then, we have never been so snobbish as to go into a tournament saying “we will win this World Cup”. We aren’t like that.
We didn’t think like that in Italy in 1990 and I know Joachim and his side didn’t think like that in the last World Cup in Brazil.
I know the quality of our players but I also feel we must be realistic.
We are not, for me, a top favourite for this World Cup.
For me that is Brazil but I know Germany are prepared to do what they have to do to win the World Cup.
It helps that Low has been involved with the national team for 14 years now.
First under Jurgen Klinsmann and since 2006 as the manager.
It is good for any team of players to have a coach who knows what it takes to win.
And he does, even if that means making big decisions like he did with Sane.
