Lera Boroditsky is an Associate Professor of Cognitive Science at UCSD and Editor in Chief of Frontiers in Cultural Psychology. She was born in Belarus in 1976. She focuses on connections between language, cognition, and perception in her research on language and cognition. She earned a B.A. from Northwestern University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, where Gordon Bower served as her thesis adviser. Her study draws on linguistics, psychology, neuroscience, and anthropology for its ideas and methodologies.
She has been designated a Searle Scholar and has won numerous honours for her work, including an NSF CAREER grant, the Marr Prize from the Cognitive Science Society, and an NSF CAREER award. Her research has shed fresh light on the contentious issue of whether the languages we speak influence our thinking (see the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis). She has found empirical evidence of cross-linguistic variations in thinking and perception resulting from syntactic or lexical differences across languages. This research influenced psychology, philosophy, and linguistics by refuting the idea that human cognition is essentially universal and unaffected by language and culture. Boroditsky delivers popular science talks to the general public in addition to her academic work, and her work has been featured in news and media sources.
