The philanthropist and entrepreneur Leon Levine of America founded the renowned Family Dollar chain of discount shops. Because his father passed away when he was just 12 years old, Levine, who was raised in a Jewish home and was born on June 8th, 1937 in Wadesboro, North Carolina, was closer to his mother.
He helped run The Hub, a small-town business owned by his family, while he was at school. In 1956, he and his brother bought a chenille bedspread business in Wingate, North Carolina, and ran it while attending classes.
However, Levine made the decision to sell the factory in 1958 after an unsuccessful sales trip to New York. Levine was struck by the idea of a store that sold goods for no more than $1 when he visited one in Kentucky in 1959.
He launched a similar store in Charlotte, North Carolina, that same year at the age of 22, selling goods for no more than $2. He launched the company under the name Family Dollar with $3,000 from himself and $3,000 from a partner.
Family Dollar eventually developed into a Fortune 400 firm and earned a reputation as a go-to shopping destination for Americans with tight budgets.
Levine was well-known for his charity efforts in addition to his commercial endeavors. Numerous organizations in the area bear his name, including the Levine Children’s Hospital, Levine Cancer Institute, and Levine Center for the Arts.
