Laura Trevelyan’s Books

- The Winchester: The Gun That Built An American Dynasty (2016). This book talks about the family behind the prominent Winchester firearm.
A Very British Family: The Trevelyan’s and Their World
“It is a rule that no Trevelyan ever sucks up either to the press, or the chiefs, or the “right people”. The world has given us cash enough to empower us to do what we believe is correct. We express gratitude toward it for that and solicit no more from it, yet to be permitted to serve it” – G.M. Trevelyan.
The Trevelyan’s are extraordinary in British social and political history: a family which for a few generations committed themselves to the administration and chronicling of their nation, from the radical, transforming civil servant Charles Edward Trevelyan to the historian G.M. Trevelyan. Regularly erratic, grandiose, noble and completely self-regarding, they have regardless left their mark on our past.
This intriguing history impartially investigates the lives and accomplishments of this unique family and the part they played in forming the history of Great Britain. From their unpropitious beginnings in a small dwelling in Cornwall to the present day, a few Trevelyans have been well known and recognized, others less in this way, yet for a hundred years from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century relatives from Lord Macaulay to G.M. Trevelyan contributed to both the composition and the creation of history.
This book is principally the story of the five men who prospered during this period – Charles Edward, George Otto, Charles Philips, George Macaulay, and Humphry Trevelyan – and the smart and impressive ladies they wedded. Counting numerous vivid portraits of the most persuasive individuals from this striking family, the Trevelyan’s illuminates the period of enormous social and cultural change where they lived and examines why they decided not to just exploit their situation as landed gentry but rather have their place at the focal point of scholarship and politics.
