She got to the Big Apple to try her hand at becoming a stage actor and recording artist.
She rose to fame in both fields, performing regularly in New York’s hottest spots, including Sweetwaters, The Bottom Line, Dangerfield’s, Town Hall (with Mercer Ellington) and a three month sold-out run at The Cookery opening for the late, great singer/composer, Alberta Hunter. She later got featured as Janis Joplin in the Off-Broadway hit Beehive, which earned her a Backstage Bistro Award. The subsequent cast album won critical acclaim and gave Laura her first national television exposure.
