Lars had been surrounded by several controversies for over a decade. He had been getting the police protection since 2007 because of the sketch he made of Prophet Mohammad with a dog’s head. It obviously offended the people who follow the Prophet. Soon after that, he started getting many death threats.
In fact, the cartoonist had also managed to escape two failed murder attempts. Outside his country, he was known for drawing Prophet’s image.
