Larry Hoover is the founder of a street gang in Chicago who called themselves the ‘Black Gangster Disciple Nation’ (the name later changed to the Gangster Disciples). Hoover was later sentenced to between 150 and 200 years in prison for killing a drug dealer. He has the name that resonates beyond the gangster underworld in American society. Hoover’s entire career has been a notorious thief, drug dealer, and murderer, and his life, when you really think about it, is the stuff of fictional movies. Let us now know more about this American gangster.

Larry Hoover: Early Life
Larry Hoover was born on November 30, 1950. He grew up in Jackson Mississippi and later moved to Chicago Illinois with his entire family. His family was looking for a better life when they moved from Mississippi, little did they know that Chicago would lead Hoover to be one of the biggest gangsters in the entire country.
Hoover from a young age was hanging out with the wrong crowd and befriending dangerous people on the streets of Chicago. At 12, he and his friends called themselves Supreme Gangsters. Hoover was the main man at the head of the group. The group was steadily gaining a following and after the expansion, people started calling him ‘Prince Larry’.
Larry Hoover: Life in the gangs and behind bars
Hoover then merged his gang with a direct rival that had David Barksdale as its leader. These two notorious gangs, after combining, created a new name, Black Disciple Nation. In 1973, the gang became associated with the murder of William Young and that was the beginning of Hoover’s long run-in with the law. Young, 19, was first kidnapped and later shot in the Englewood neighborhood. Hoover had been the one to order the killing. Later that year, Hoover and murderer Andrew Howard were arrested by the police. In November 1973, Hoover was charged with murder and sentenced to between 150 and 200 years in prison. Hoover was then sent to the Statesville Correctional Center in Illinois.

While in prison, he completed his General Educational Development degree and obtained an emergency medical technician license. Hoover later learned that the leader of his gang, Barksdale, had died due to kidney failure that was the result of a gunshot and in 1974. He was then taken over as the leader of the gang. Unsurprisingly, Hoover performed his duties from the prison itself. There he was running the biggest criminal cartel while he was in his cell.
Under his tutelage, his gang was gaining control of Chicago’s South Side. He was influencing his every move straight from prison to dominate the south side of the drug trade business. Hoover’s drug business began in Chicago and eventually spread throughout the United States.
Larry Hoover: After the Bars
After spending years behind bars, Hoover unexpectedly began insisting that he didn’t want to be associated with his violent past. He had a clear motive for becoming an urban political celebrity in Chicago. His gang, ‘The Gangster Disciples’, began to gain an incredible fan base by changing their ways from violence to attending charity events and undertaking peaceful projects. He even changed the name of the gang to “Growth and Development”. In 1995, estimates say that his group had 30,000 members in more than 35 US states. This success earned him and his band around $100 million a year.
In 1995, after an extensive federal investigation, Hoover received another life sentence. After the 17-year investigation came to an end, they discovered Hoover’s involvement in the drug conspiracy and extortion. Hoover was captured by federal agents and transferred to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in 1997 for trial and was found guilty. Hoover was later sentenced to six life terms and served in the US Administrative Penitentiary, the highest US facility in Colorado.
Later, it emerged that their “non-profit” organizations were all fronts for masking money laundering. A testimony from one of his disciples suggested that the profits from the charity were not helping anyone. This was just a plot that helped Larry Hoover win more.
Larry Hoover: Net worth and death rumors
Due to Larry’s involvement in shady dealings, he has acquired assets of various kinds and identifying them is a monumental challenge. Hoover was an expert drug trafficker who knew the ins and outs of the money laundering business. He managed to perfect the art of transferring money by carrying out different illicit activities. In the nearly 30,000-member gang, everyone had a share of $3,300 a year. Looking at figures like these, it’s safe to estimate that this American gangster was worth at least $100 million.

There have been several attempts to assassinate this drug lord, but he keeps getting away. He is currently alive and serving his sentence in Colorado.
