Lamar Nathaniel Thomas (born February 12, 1970 in Ocala, Florida) is a former National Football League player who also worked as a colour commentator for many years. During his collegiate football and basketball careers at the University of Miami, Thomas also competed in track and field. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the 1993 National Football League Draft. He was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 as a member of the class of 2014. While playing for the Miami Hurricanes, Thomas established a school record for the most catches in a single season (later eclipsed by Reggie Wayne).
George Teague’s strip of the football at the 10 yard line in the 1993 Sugar Bowl, which extended Alabama’s thrashing of Miami, was the cause of his demise in the game. Thomas was interviewed about his time at the University of Miami for the documentary The U, which aired on ESPN on December 12, 2009, and is now available on DVD and iTunes. Thomas was a wide receiver in the National Football League for eight seasons, spending three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and five with the Miami Dolphins, where he had his greatest success. When he retired from professional football after his final season, he had 43 catches for 603 yards and five touchdowns. His final two seasons were spent on injured reserve due to a knee injury (shoulder and hip). His remarks during an on-field fight between the University of Miami and Florida International University led to his dismissal from his color-commentary job.
