His mother, father and daughter
Kyrie Irving is the son of Drederick Irving and the late Elizabeth Irving. His father, a former basketball player, was born on January 11, 1966 in New York City and was raised in Bronx’s Mitchel housing projects by his mother, Lillian Irving, along with his six siblings. Drederick’s father abandoned the family when he was a toddler and as a result his mother had to work two jobs to support her children.
Dred, as he is affectionately known, attended Stevenson High School in the Bronx where he played basketball before continuing his collegiate career at Boston University. He was among the most prolific players in the history of Boston University and was once first in the Terriers career rankings (he is now third). He was an all-conference pick in 1986 and 1988 and was the team’s Most Valuable Player in 1988. After graduating from college with a degree in economics, the school retired his No. 11 jersey in 1988 and inducted him into the Boston University Athletic Hall of Fame.
After his college career, Kyrie Irving’s father received an invitation to the Boston Celtics Training Camp, but was later rescinded. He then found employment with a financial firm, where he worked as a credit manager until 1992 when he moved to Melbourne, Australia with his wife. There he played professionally for the Bulleen Boomers of the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL). He played for the team in the 1992 season after signing a contract with them and dominating the league by 30ppm.
Drederick met his first wife, Elizabeth Larson, at Boston University. She was a member of the school’s volleyball team, a trained pianist (classical), and the daughter of a Lutheran minister. They started dating in school and tied the knot shortly after graduation.
The couple gave birth to their two children (Asia and Kyrie Irving) in Australia before returning to the United States in 1994. Two years later, Elizabeth contracted sepsis and died at the age of 29. Irving, who was just four years old when his mother died, was raised by his father with the help of his aunts. His father eventually remarried to a woman named Shetellia Irving and together they have a daughter named London.
Irving’s older sister, Asia, is an aspiring model.
On November 23, 2015, Kyrie Irving welcomed a daughter named Azurie Elizabeth with his former girlfriend and Texas beauty queen, Andrea Wilson. He named the little princess after his late mother, Elizabeth Irving. The talented gamer has a long list of ex-girlfriends with whom he has had relationships that never made it to the altar. Like his previous relationships, his relationship with his baby mom didn’t survive a period of time. Though things were never smooth, things got worse between the couple after the birth of their daughter. However, he is very present in his baby’s life, paying Wilson $4,500 in child support.
