Kyan, a Cambridge singer-songwriter, has a powerful ready-made R&B-meets-soul package with his hazy self-assured sound and dreamy accompanying visuals – a result of producing his own music since his pre-teens.
And whether he’s playing a white piano on a desolate beach, exploring California’s Death Valley, or floating through the hazy old canals of Mexico City for the mesmerizing visuals for his latest album, “Like Summer”.
When he was younger, he was a big fan of Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development, and early Kanye West.
Those hip hop recordings were a kind of bridge into the Stevie, Roberta Flack, Ray Charles, and Motown that he learned to love, thanks to the massive sampling. In addition, he was smitten by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles.
