Clemson University track and field lead trainer Mark Elliott reported the marking of Keco Morrison to the Tigers’ men’s program on Thursday, just as the signings of Kori Carter and Nicolee Foster to the ladies’ group. Morrison is set to join Clemson this up and coming spring, while Carter and Foster will join the Tigers in the fall of 2019.

Carter currently attends Nansemond River High School in Norfolk, Virginia and is a two-time Virginia High School League (VHSL) state champion (5A/6A) in the 100mH and 300mH. Carter won state titles in both events in 2017 and 2018. After winning the 2018 state championship in the 100mH, Carter registered her personal best of 13.49 seconds at the New Balance Nationals Outdoor two weeks later. Indoors, Carter also won VHSL championships in both the 55mH and 55m dash. Carter’s PR in the 55mH is 7.90 seconds, and 7.05 in the 55m straightaway.

“For Kori coming out of high school, I would say she’s one of the top U.S. hurdlers in both [events] – long and short hurdles. I think she’ll be a major contributor for us immediately. I also view her as one of our best signings since we’ve been here as coaches. For us to sign one a top high school hurdler like her, that’ tremendous for our program.”

Foster is set to transfer from Central Arizona College, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) program based in Coolidge, Arizona. Foster swept both the 400mH and 100mH titles at the 2018 NJCAA Outdoor Championships.

Additionally, she ran the top prelim time (8.44) in the 60mH and was the 600m runner-up at the 2018 NJCAA Indoor Championships. Foster set personal bests in both events in the spring of 2017 while in high school in Kingston, Jamaica. In the 400mH, Foster achieved her PR of 56.65 seconds before registering her personal best in the 100mH – 13.40 seconds – the very next day.

Kori Carter Challenge

“My greatest challenge was moving last fall from Los Angeles to Kentucky to be coached by my old college coach, Flo (Edrick Floreal). It was a difficult move for me because it forced me out of my comfort zone, but it was necessary for me to make it to the next level.

“At the end of the 2016 season, I was racking my brain to work out what went wrong. I had only just missed out on one spot from making the Olympic team, so it was not as if I was running terribly. But I knew I had to make a change because I didn’t want to be in this same position and feel like this again.

“The first time I really realized all the sacrifices were worth it came in the World Championships semi-finals. I felt solid in the race, although towards the end I felt a little weird (Carter finished second in 54.92).

When I talked to coach Flo after the race, I said I went through perfectly to five but he said you messed up at hurdle five. I thought I had alternated at six but he was right, it was hurdle five. I was running the race so quickly, I thought I was at hurdle six.

This made me believe that if I can make such a huge mistake and still feel so strong, then that is a good sign. I then went on to win gold in the final in 53.07.

“When you are pushed out of your comfort zone, there are no guarantees that everything is going to work. But winning the world title made all the sacrifices worth it.”
