Koos Bekke Emily Estate
Koos opened multi-million-pound estate The Newt in Somerset in the United Kingdom, after six years of renovation. The hotel, garden, and restaurant complex, a roughly three-hour drive from London, has spiraling gardens day visitors can enjoy, a spa, and a cider press. The hotel itself features 13 suites housed in a Georgian mansion and 10 rooms in the Stable Yard’s original horse yard buildings.
Koos and wife Karen, the former editor of Elle Decoration South Africa, acquired the 400-hectare property in 2013, the Telegraph reported. The roughly 300-year-old property previously housed the Hobhouse family for close to two centuries, including acclaimed English garden designer Penelope Hobhouse.
French garden architect Patrice Travelle, the same garden designer used for the development of Babylonstoren, was used to design the spiraling gardens. In an interview with the Financial Times, Karen said she never thinks big. ”I would have been happy with a little courtyard. But my husband, he is different. He thinks on sale.”
The property is Grade II listed, which means it required additional care to be taken during construction to preserve the building’s architecture. Before Koos and Karen could start construction, they also had to ensure that the roughly 2,000 endangered newts would be protected. In honor of the effort made to protect the small amphibian, they renamed the estate from Hadspen House to The Newt.
Today, Thye Newt claims to have one of England’s largest collection of apple tree cultivators with 267 cultivators planted. It also features the hide-and-seek woven ”nest” on silts built by South African designer Porky Hefer, which Babylonstoren also has.
Koos Bekke Career
After a few years in advertising, he acquired an MBA degree from Columbia Business School, graduating in 1984. As a result of a project paper, he, with a few young colleagues, founded one of the first two pay-television services outside of the United States. M-Net and its sister companies, such as Multichoice, finally expanded to 48 countries across Africa.
In the 1990s, he was a founding director of the mobile communications company MTN. In 1997 Koos became CEO of Naspers, one of the initial investors in the M-Net/Multichoice group. Naspers bought out the other shareholders. During his time, the market capitalization of Naspers grew from about $1.2 billion to $45 billion.
His compensation package was unusual in that for fifteen years as CEO he earned no salary, bonus, or perks. He was compensated solely via stock option grants that vested over time. Forbes ”Rich List 2019” ranked Koos as the 1002nd wealthiest person in the world, and fourth wealthiest South African for 2019, with a fortune of US$2.3 billion.
