Kirby Chambliss (born October 18, 1959 in Corpus Christi, Texas) is a famous world champion in aerobatics and an American commercial pilot. Chambliss was born in the Texas city of Corpus Christi. He aspired to be a pilot since he was a child. His father was a skydiver, and he admired the steep spiral in the sky that the pilot used to return the skydivers to the land. He earned money by refuelling planes throughout his high school years. After formal flight instruction, Chambliss began solo flying at the age of 16 in December 1979, and obtained his private licence the following March. He started off as a licenced flight instructor, then transitioned to a night freight pilot.
In 1985, he was able to undergo aerobatic flying school and purchase his own aerobatic aircraft thanks to his subsequent work as a business jet pilot. Chambliss rose through the ranks to the elite “unlimited” level after winning first place in his first competition. He joined the US Aerobatic Team in 1997 and later became its captain. He won five national titles in the United States and 13 medals in global championships. He is the 2000 Men’s Freestyle World Champion and has over 27000 flying hours under his belt. Chambliss lost power while doing a high Alpha pass at the Illopango Airshow in El Salvador in 2013. After a forced landing on a rocky slope, Chambliss evacuated his plane with minor injuries. When he is not practising or competing, Chambliss loves performing in traditional airshows all year. He has competed in the international aerobatic competition Red Bull Air Race World since 2003.
